In 1985 he was appointed to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts and in 1987 Sapp was appointed as an Officer to the Order of Canada. About the Book: The Song Within My Heart is based off of Allen Sapp's memories from his childhood. It tells the story of a boy preparing for his first powwow and his grandmother's guidance through the events. About the Artist: Dennis J. Weber is a Métis artist, teacher, and mentor to Aboriginal children in Kelowna. Interestingly, Louis Riel is Weber's first cousin five generations removed. Weber's Métis heritage on his mother's side is an inspiration for his artwork and he is credited with aiding in reviving his culture. About the Book: The Secret of Your Name explores the consequences of the 1885 resistance. Since many Métis people were deprived and robbed of their culture, land, and pride many do and did not know their heritage. Pam Aleekuk is currently an educator in Edmonton, Alberta and also works with Aboriginal communities in Canada's North and Alberta. She is of Métis descent and has been nominated twice for the Governor General's Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian history. About the Artist: Leonard Paul is a Mi'kmaq artist and art instructor for youth. His art has been featured around the globe, such as at the 1983 United Nations international exhibition in New York. In 1993, he was awarded the Canada's Governor General Medal for Visual Arts. About the Book: Long Powwow Nights takes the reader into the life of a mother who is dedicated to her Indigenous heritage and her hopes to instill the importance of culture and identity on her child.
